Transforming an unused rooftop into a summer event series
Summer in Sound began when two organisers approached me to help develop and deliver a new event concept at the rooftop of BOX Headingley — a space that hadn't previously been used for parties of this kind.
The project involved taking an untested venue and working collaboratively to turn it into a functioning event environment, eventually delivering four events with audiences of over 200 people.
My Role
Event Production · Sound & Lighting · Videography · Content Creation · Editing · Collaborative Planning
Building the Experience
My involvement focused primarily on the production side of the events. I supplied and helped operate the sound system, lighting and additional equipment required to transform the rooftop from its everyday use into an event space.
Unlike The Houseparty, where I had control over much of the wider concept, Summer in Sound required me to work collaboratively with the two organisers, contributing my production experience while working within a shared vision for the events.
Working with a New Venue
Because the rooftop hadn't previously hosted events of this kind, there wasn't an existing production format to follow.
This meant considering how sound, lighting, equipment and the physical environment could work together within an unfamiliar space, then adapting the setup as we gained experience across the series.
Content
Alongside production, I filmed the events and edited the footage into promotional content.
Working within a live environment required capturing moments as they happened while dealing with changing light, crowds and the practical constraints of filming around an active event.
Outcome
Summer in Sound developed from an initial idea into four rooftop events attracting 200+ paying attendees per event, demonstrating how an unconventional space could be transformed into a successful live event environment.
For me, the project provided further experience in event production while introducing a much more collaborative way of working — bringing my technical and creative skills into someone else's concept and helping turn it into a tangible experience.
